Group Protests FALINTIL Demobilization
.
JORNAL INDEPENDENTE - 5.10.2011
DILI: Political group CPD-RDTL will demonstrate in Dili
today against the state’s decision to demobilize FALINTIL this
year.
A demobilization ceremony was held in the
capital on FALINTIL Day, August 20.
CPD-RDTL coordinator Antonio Aitahan Matak said
about 45,500 people would join the peaceful three-day demonstration.
Mr Aitahan Matak said his group would read a
statement outlining its position on demobilization at the protest.
CPD-RDTL considered the demobilization a way of
forgetting the veterans, he said.
“Demobilization is a big crime in
Timor(-Leste).”
Secretary of State for Security Francisco
Guterres and PNTL Dili district commander Pedro Belo met Prime Minister Xanana
Gusmao to discuss the demonstration yesterday.
President of the Republic Jose Ramos-Horta said
every citizen had the right to demonstrate but CPD-RDTL’s protest would not
change the state’s position on demobilization.
Meanwhile, FRETILIN is concerned about
CPD-RDTL’s unauthorized use of FRETILIN flags.
“FRETILIN wants to make it clear that it has
nothing whatsoever to do with this demonstration, and the use of the FRETILIN
flags is not authorized by FRETILIN. The organization in question has
persistently continued to use the FRETILIN flag for some time,” FRETILIN’s
office in Dili said.
“Upon being informed that a number of persons
on a number of these trucks were carrying and displaying FRETILIN flags, the
FRETILIN leadership immediately requested the PNTL, and the PNTL agreed to act
to prevent this from continuing. We are informed that action has already been
taken by PNTL in this regard.
“The FRETILIN flag is a historic symbol but
also, according to the legislation in place, the exclusive and legally protected
symbol of the Revolutionary Front for an Independent Timor-Leste (FRETILIN) as a
political party.”
PNTL General Commander Longuinhos Monteiro said
he had spoken to the head of UNPol about the issue and they hoped to find a
solution tomorrow before the demonstration begins in the late afternoon.
PNTL will not remove the FRETILIN flags by
force because there is no law to protect police taking this kind of action, Mr
Monteiro said.
